WebCD Globe Installing the WebCD Viewer

When the end-user installs a WebCD, the following items are installed onto their PC:

Item Platform Description
WebCD desktop icon Win95 and NT 4.x (for YOUR WebCD title, customizable--see Customizing the WebCD Viewer icon)
WebCD Program Group All* (for YOUR WebCD title)
WebCD Viewer Program Group All* (contains generalized WebCD Viewer, uninstall and help icons)
WebCD Viewer software All* (minimal amount to handle startup when user places a WebCD in their CD-ROM drive)

*All = Windows 95, Windows NT 4.x, Windows 3.x.

WebCD Desktop Icon

On Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.x operating systems, WebCD will install an icon on the desktop. The user can use this icon to launch the WebCD. The icon name is the title you assign to your WebCD on the Build Wizard: Set the Title and Version dialog. (This option can also be set on the Build Options dialog.)

WebCD Program Group and Icon

On Windows 95, Windows NT 4.x, and Windows 3.x WebCD installation creates a Program Group or Folder that contains an icon for the WebCD title being installed. The icon name is the title you assign to your WebCD on the Build Wizard: Set the Title and Version dialog. The Program Group name is also assigned on this dialog. (These options can also be set on the Build Options dialog.)

For example, if you created a project called "Practice". When you build the project, you must specify a Title (used as the icon name) and a Program Group name on the Build Wizard: Set the Title and Version dialog. (These options can also be set on the Build Options dialog.) If you accept the default Title and Program Group name of "Practice", when the end-user installs the "Practice" WebCD, a Program Group named Practice will be created containing an icon named Practice. This icon can be used to launch the WebCD.

Note If you attempt to use the WebCD "title" icon for one WebCD to run a different WebCD title (i.e., you double-click the icon for WebCD A, but the CD-ROM drive contains WebCD B), an informational message will be displayed to let the user know they are not running the intended WebCD. The message box allows the user to either continue the operation and view the WebCD in the CD-ROM drive or cancel the operation.

WebCD Viewer Program Group

On Windows 95, Windows NT 4.x, and Windows 3.x WebCD installation creates a second "generic" WebCD Viewer Program Group or Folder. This folder contains three icons:

Icon Description
WebCD Viewer Runs the WebCD in the CD-ROM drive, regardless of its title.
Uninstall WebCD Viewer Removes all icons, groups, and software placed onto the PC by WebCD Viewer. (See Uninstalling the WebCD Viewer )
WebCD Viewer Help Displays WebCD Viewer help.

WebCD Viewer Software

On Windows 95, Windows NT 4.x, and Windows 3.x WebCD installation copies a minimal part of the WebCD Viewer software to the user's hard drive. This software handles starting up the WebCD that the user has placed in their CD-ROM drive. The majority of WebCD Viewer operations are handled by executables stored on the WebCD itself.
